Educating all students to reach their highest potential continues to be a passion of mine.
Where I will continue to work for you:
- Continue to pressure senior government to fund new schools and classrooms.
- Bring more focus to support student mental health.
- Lobby government for additional operating funds.
- Continue to promote sensible financial decisions.
New schools and classrooms
During the past four years a new elementary school, Smiling Creek, has opened on Burke Mountain and more schools will soon follow for this area. Eagle Mountain Middle was also opened and three other schools have had seismic replacements completed. Thirty-eight additional classrooms and nineteen portables have been added to increase classroom space and several additions to buildings are in progress, however funding from the Provincial government has not been adequate to cover all of these capital costs. I will continue to pressure senior government to fund all capital costs in our school district.
Mental health support
Schools are seeing increasing numbers of students with mental health challenges. Our district has added a Mental Health Coordinator and I will continue to lobby for increased focus and staffing to support our vulnerable students.
Our school district continues to be among the lowest funded districts in the Province. I will continue to oppose provincial downloading of costs and pressure the government to provide the necessary funding.
During the past 4 years this Board has made excellent financial decisions and paid off $13.4 million of debt from previous years. I will continue to monitor finances and make sensible financial decisions for our district.
